I have a love affair going on with Hollyhocks, I can never, ever have too many of them. Majestic spires and beautiful colours…. a true country cottage favourite to me, the butterflies and the bees!
The tall spires of the Hollyhock Nigra plant contain dark maroon-black blooms with contrastive white eyes, giving the plant a superbly dramatic appearance. This magnificent variation of an old-time favourite in the garden is likely to attract attention due to its towering stature and vibrant colour. If you want to create a very striking contrast, try planting it alongside lighter flowers.
These hardy perennials can also be cut and brought indoors to be displayed in a vase as they produce lovely flowers.
- Seed Quantity: 50 Seeds
- Type: Perennial
- Genus: Alcea rosea
- Sow Seeds: I find it best to sow the seeds in June into seed trays, pot on when bigger and then plant them out into the garden in September to flower the following late spring/early summer. You can just sow them directly into position in May-June if you prefer. Cover the seeds only very lightly as they need light to germinate. These are tall plants and need space so place 2 feet apart when planting out. Grow them up against walls and fences or stake them to protect them from the wind.
- Plant Out: Pot on once large enough to handle and then plant out where they are to grow in September. Will flower the following year. Tall plants for the back of a border or against a wall
- Flowers: April - July
- Height & Spread: 2.5m high x 60cm spread
RHS Plants for Pollinators.
